Why soft dry sand bogs an electric beach cart - and what actually gets through it

If you have searched "best electric beach cart for soft sand", you have already hit the thing that trips most buyers up: a cart that glides across wet, packed sand near the water can bog badly the moment you point it up the dry, powdery stuff between the car park and the flags. That is the real question worth answering before you spend anything - not "how many watts", but "what actually gets a loaded cart through soft sand".
Here is the short version, then the detail.
Soft sand is a traction problem, not just a power problem
Dry, loose sand does not push back the way firm ground does. When a driven wheel loses grip, it spins, and a spinning wheel digs itself a hole instead of moving you forward. More motor power on its own does not fix that - it can make it worse, because you are just spinning harder.
Two things decide whether a cart keeps moving through soft sand:
- How many wheels are actually driven. A cart driving two wheels asks those two to do all the work. If they slip, you stop. Spreading drive across all four wheels means if one loses grip, the others keep pulling.
- How much tyre sits on the sand. A wider, fatter tyre footprint spreads the load and floats over soft sand rather than knifing into it.

Most families do not spend every day on deep, dry dunes, and you do not have to jump straight to the flagship. The Carti Pro at $1,999 is the all-rounder: 700W, 150kg load, around 20km range, handles slopes to about 15%, and folds down to 48 x 29 x 75cm for the boot. On firm and moderately soft sand with a sensible load, it does the everyday beach run well.
Where the Pro reaches its limit is exactly the scenario above - a heavy load across a long stretch of powdery, unpacked sand. That is not a fault, it is the difference between a capable everyday cart and a purpose-built 4WD. Being honest about that gap is more useful to you than pretending one cart does everything.
The compact Carti X at $550 sits below both: 100W, 150kg load, around 6km range, slopes to about 10%, and just 12.5kg to lift. It is genuinely good for light beach days and easy carrying on firmer ground - it is not the tool for hauling an esky through dunes, and we would rather say so.

A couple of honest, facts-only comparisons, because you are cross-shopping:
- Load rating: The Beach Mule 500HD, sold here through BeachWheels Australia, carries a higher load rating (around 227kg) than the Carti Pro's 150kg - credit where it is due. If sheer load is your deciding factor, the Carti Lux answers it directly at 300kg.
- Range on paper: The Big Kahuna import runs a 48V system with roughly 13km range and about 160kg load. The Carti Pro's ~20km range is longer, though range depends heavily on load, sand softness and slope - treat every quoted figure that way, ours included.
- Manual alternatives: A manual wagon like the Burleigh has a big, well-earned review base. If you are fit, only cross firm sand, and do not mind pushing, a manual wagon is a real option. An electric cart earns its keep on the soft, uphill, heavily loaded trips where pushing stops being fun.
Considerations before you buy
- Match the cart to your worst trip, not your easiest. If the hardest thing you do is a short walk over firm sand, the X or Pro is plenty. If your regular haul is a loaded family setup across dry dunes, the Lux 4WD is the honest pick.
- Weight to lift matters too. The X is 12.5kg, the Pro 22.6kg, the Lux 32.6kg. A heavier cart does more, but you still have to get it in and out of the car.
- Everything is covered the same way: a 12-month warranty including the battery, and a 30-day change-of-mind return window (unused, original packaging, return freight on you).
