Fat tyre e-bikes have one famous problem that has nothing to do with riding them: they're big. Big tyres, big frames, and a shape that laughs at most car boots and hallway corners. There are two honest solutions - fold the bike, or rack the bike - and which one is right depends entirely on how you live.
Where a folding frame genuinely wins
The caravan and 4WD crowd. Tourers love fat tyre bikes because they turn a campsite into a ten-kilometre radius of beaches and tracks. But storage on the road is brutal. A folding fat tyre e-bike collapses at the frame hinge and drops into a boot, a caravan tunnel boot or a ute canopy without claiming your towbar - which half the time is already holding the van.
Boat owners. A folded bike stows in a locker or against a transom. Ride to the ramp's amenities, the bakery, the mate's place two bays over - without towing anything extra.
Apartments, townhouses and small garages. No shed? A folded frame stands in a corner or a wardrobe-depth cupboard. That alone is the difference between owning a fat tyre bike and not owning one for a lot of coastal apartment dwellers.
One car, many hobbies. If the boot has to carry golf clubs on Saturday and a bike on Sunday, folding means never choosing.
What folding costs you - the honest bit
A hinge adds weight and a fold-unfold ritual to every ride. It's a minute of your life each end, but it's real. Folding frames also typically come in one frame size, where full-size bikes fit tall riders with more room to move. If your bike lives in a shed, rolls out the door and rides from home, folding solves a problem you don't have.
